논문 초록이란?'

국어대사전(금성출판사)에 따르면, “초록”은 “어떤 문장에서, 필요한 것만 뽑아 내어 기록하는 일. 또는, 그렇게 기록한 것”을 말한다. 한국에서 논문 초록은 주로 석·박사 학위 논문의 요약(abstract)을 가리킬 때 사용되고 있다.'
논문 초록은 사정상 논문 전체를 읽는 데 시간을 할애하지 못하는 독자를 대상으로, 효과적으로 해당 논문을 압축하여, 저자의 논지를 독자에게 알리는 것을 그 목표로 하고 있다.'
학술 발표용 논문 초록의 단락은 대체로 하나로 이루어져 있다. 하지만 학위 논문 초록의 경우 서론·본론·결론의 논문의 3단 구성에 토대를 두어 3개 단락으로 이루어지며, 본론 부분이 여러 장으로 나누어질 때 그에 따라서 단락의 수도 늘어나기도 한다.

What is Essay?'

“에세이(essay)”를 한국어로 번역하면 “수필”이 된다. “수필”의 뜻을 풀이하면 “형식에 얽매이지 않고 인생과 자연에 대하여 보고 느낀 것을 생각 나는 대로 써 나가는 산문 형식의 짧은 글”(국어대사전, 금성출판사)이 된다. 하지만, 영어의 “essay”는 일정한 형식과 구조(서론·본론·결론)를 지닌 글로 글쓴이의 생각이나 관점을 독자에게 합리적으로 납득시키는 데 그 목적을 두고 있다.'
에세이는 크게 “논증 에세이(argument essay)”, “설명 에세이(explanation essay)”, “논고 에세이(discussion essay)” 등의 3개로 나누어진다.'
논증 에세이는 하나의 사안(issue)에 대해 한 측면만을 부가하는 에세이를 말한다. 설명 에세이는 과정, 현상, 경향이나 상황에 대하여 설명하는 글을 가리킨다.'
설명 에세이는 원인과 그것에 의하여 발생하는 결과, 즉 인과관계를 포함하지만, 글쓴이의 논점은 제시되지 않는다.
마지막으로, 논거 에세이는 하나의 사안에 대하여 대립되는 두 가지 측면에서 바라 본 주장들이 제시되며, 글쓴이의 총괄적인 의견이 결론을 맺게 된다.'
