The official name of South Korea is the Republic of Korea. In the Korean language, South Korea is referred to as han guk 한국, the abbreviation for ‘dae han min guk 대한민국.’ South Korea is a peninsula state which lies at the eastern end of the Asian continent and which is located at 33 and 34 degrees north latitude and 124 and 131 degrees east longitude. The Korean peninsula is bordered by China and Russia to the north and it is separated from Japan to the south by the Korea Strait.
