Short-cut cooking is source of guilt for busy new wife DEAR ABBY: I am a full-time working woman, part-time student and new wife to an incredible husband. We're in our mid-20s and have been living together for a year, but I have a problem that I'm still unsure about. Growing up I never learned to cook. The first meal I ever made was spaghetti when my husband (then fiance) and I moved into our home. My issue is, I hate cooking. I don't have the patience for it and neither does my husband. Should I be ashamed that I indulge in "box" dinners that take little time to prepare? Naturally, I cook meat and vegetables to go along with them, but is it shameful when a wife doesn't cook everything from scratch? My husband doesn't mind, but I worry. Shouldn't a wife cook real meals for her husband? NEW WIFE IN NORTH CAROLINA DEAR NEW WIFE: Because many couples both work, many husbands and wives take turns cooking or prepare dinner together. ("Honey, I'll do the salad and vegetables; you fix the chicken/fish/chops on the grill.") The problem with prepackaged meals is that many of them contain more sodium and/or other additives that nutritionists say are bad for one's health when consumed on a regular basis, so I think you do have cause for concern. The most important ingredient in a lasting marriage is a partner who lasts, so if you want yours to last, be vigilant about what you put in your stomachs. 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * short-cut 손쉬운, 간단한/ 손쉬운 방법, 지름길/ 손쉬운 방법으로 하다, 간단히 줄이다 (= a quicker way of getting somewhere than the usual route) * incredible (너무 좋거나 커서) 믿기 어려울 정도인 e.g.) The hotel was incredible. * unsure 확실히 알지 못하는, 확신이 없는 (= If you are unsure about something, you feel uncertain about it) e.g.) He was unsure of what to do next. 그는 다음에 뭘 해야 할지 확실히 알 수가 없었다. e.g.) She's unsure about all that stuff. * meal (특히 아침・점심・저녁의) 식사[끼니], 끼니 때 나오는 음식 (= the food you eat during a meal) * from scratch 백지상태로부터 (= If you do something from scratch, you do it without making use of anything that has been done before) * ingredient 성분, 구성 요소, 재료 e.g.) The cook is adding an ingredient to the mix. 요리사가 요리 재료들을 섞어 버무리고 있다 * vigilant (격식) 바짝 경계하는, 조금도 방심하지 않는 e.g.) A pilot must remain vigilant at all times.
