5.1.4 Diving down (1) Diving down is conducted by the rope for diving down or the stage. (2) The assistant personnel check whether the air is fully supplied or whether the pressure is maintained to withstand the growing water pressure. (3) While the diver is diving down, he/she adjusts the amount of the supplied air to breathe comfortably. At the same time, the diver is to adjust the pressure while keeping equilibrium, in order to make the diving suit cling to his/her body properly. (4) While the diver is diving down, he/she keeps the balance of pressure in his/her ears and the pupil of his/her eyes. If the diver feels pain in his/her ears or the pupil or finds other disorder, he/she stop diving instantly. (5) The problem of pressure balance can be resolved by keeping a balance of pressure through a slight rise. If it is not resolved, the diver comes to the surface of the water. (6) Observances while diving down (A) As shown in Fig. 5, the diver twists the rope for diving down holding the rope by his/her one hand. Then, he/she keeps tight hold of the twisted rope between his/her legs. He/she enables the other hand to move freely in order to adjust the air conditioning valve. (B) When the diver dives down in the tidal current, he/she is to turn the back lest he/she be swept away off by the current. When the speed of the tidal current is over 1.5 knots, he can dive down in the maximum vertical direction by wearing a heavier weight belt or using a heavier stage before diving. (C) When the diver dives down by using a stage for decompression, he/she moves to the operation site by using the shackle around the rope for diving down after lowering the winch. (D) The maximum speed of diving down is 22 meters (75 feet) per minute. The actual speed can be decreased due to the diver’s ability to adjust the balance of pressure and the conditions of the surrounding ocean floor (e.g. the tidal current, a weaken visibility, etc.). (E) If the diver reaches the sea bottom, he/she sends a signal of arrival. If the conditions of the ocean floor are greatly different from the expected ones, the diver makes an instant report on the observations to the supervisor. If the supervisor has several questions on the diver’s safety and environmental changes, he/she discontinues the operation. (F) As soon as the diver reaches the sea bottom, he/she conducts ventilation. After that, he conducts ventilation periodically, if necessary. |
