1. and【등위】 ① “∼와(과)”․“∼하고” (also) (※ 선행절과 후행절이 동시다발적으로 일어남을 나타낸다.) ex-1) you and I 너와 나 ex-2) you, he, and I 너와 그와 나 ex-3) He looked tired and (he looked tired) ill. 그는 피곤하고 아파보였다. ex-4) He declined the offer and so did I. 그는 제의를 거절했고 또 나도 거절했다. ex-5) He has long hair and he wears jeans. ② “∼해서”․“∼한 결과” (therefore) (※ 선행절을 이유로 필연적으로 후행절이 일어남을 나타낸다.) ex-1) He agreed to the plan, and all the rest followed him. 그는 계획에 동의했다, 그러자 나머지 사람들도 모두 그를 따랐다. ex-2) He heard an explosion and (he) phoned the police. ③ “∼하고 나서” (then) (※ 시간적 경과로 선행절 다음에 후행절이 일어남을 나타낸다.) ex-1) He bowed and (he) went away. 그는 절을 하고서 가버렸다. ex) She washed the dishes and (she) dried them. ④ “∼하는데 비해서” (in contrast) ex) Robert is secretive and David is candid. 로버트는 무언가를 숨기는데 비해서 데비드는 솔직하다. ⑤ “∼하는데도” (yet) (※ 선행절의 본의 아닌 결과․사실에 대해서 후행절이 놀람․불만을 나타낸다. ex-1) They sailed for Chejudo from Inchon and (they) landed on Mokpo. 그들은 인천에서 제주도를 향해 출범했는데도 상륙한 곳은 목포였다. ex-2) He wroks hard and (he) is still poor. 그는 열심히 일을 하는데도 여전히 가난하다. ex) He tried hard and he failed. ⑥ 가정법
