A Study of Aesthetic Boundary Line Depicted by the Joseon Dynasty Period's Keum Myeong his research explores a correlation between a geomungo (Korean musical instrument with six strings) and classical scholars and understands how the so-called aesthetic concept was reflected in their lifestyle and philosophy. It aims to examine systematically how Keum Myeong 琴銘 (sentences carved on a six-stringed Korean harp) explains methods of character-building or practice of classical scholars whose ultimate goal was Chen In Hap Il 天人合一 (the unity of the sky and the sun, that is, harmony between nature and human) and how Keum Myeong writers' ultimate boundary was expressed. In the Joseon Dynasty classical scholars made a geomungo a part of their life. This does not mean that they had an appreciation of the music by the geomungo or made emphasis on a physical phenomenon. Rather, this means that they accepted a virtue expressed by the geomungo as part of their life. Furthermore, this shows that the principle of making a geomungo had them recognize it as a companion for the followings: Kyek Mool Chi Ji 格物致知 (gaining knowledge by the study of things), Soo Ki Chi In 修己治人 (cultivating body and mind and then governing others), leaning a benevolence, and Chen In Hap Il. |
