There is another reason why classical scholars made a geomungo a part of their life, in addition to a direct and realistic role for building-character mentioned as above. The reason is an instrumental role of geomungo for communication. That is to say, the reason why classical scholars possessed a geomungo and recognized it as a part of their life is that they delivered their moral character or an ideal pursued by them through a channel of geomungo rather than language or character. This means that the geomungo played a role of communication instrument which enabled them to share their inner world (i.e. moral character and the world of spirits). So, classical scholars extolled a virtue depicted by the geomungo, recorded the role of the geomungo, or carved the role on the geomungo. Generally, the carved sentences are called Keum Myeong. Keum Myeong refers to sentences which express not only a virtue and symbolism conveyed by a geomungo but also the writer's border line of life, way of building-character, ideal and ultimate boundary line. It can be drawn from this that Keum Myeong itself has very important significance in that it is a restatement of communication through a meaningful convention. |
