변박은 1763 ~ 1764년에 일본에 간 통신사행(通信使行)에 참여하여 화가로서 많은 활동을 하였다. 이 통신사행(通信使行)의 최고 책임자인 정사(正使)는 조엄(趙?)이었다. 조엄(趙?)의 사행일기(使行日記)인 「해사일기(海?日記)」에는 변박(卞璞)과 관련된 내용이 몇 가지 있다. 1763년 10월10일, 통신사행(通信使行) 이 쓰시마(對馬島)에 머물 때, 쓰시마(對馬島)의 지도와 인쇄된 일본 지도를 구할 수 있었다. 조엄은 변박(卞璞)으로 하여 이를 옮겨 그리도록 하였는데, 변박(卞璞)은 동래 사람으로 문자에 능하고 그림을 잘 그려 기선장(騎船將)으로 삼았다 전한다. 1764년 6월 8일 조엄의 일기에는, 수륙(水陸)의 각 참(站)을 지날 때, 명산대천(名山大川)의 풍경을 변박(卞璞)으로 하여금 그리게 하였다. 공식 화원인 김유성(金有聲)이 있음에도 불구하고 변박(卞璞)은 화가로서 정사(正使)인 조엄을 보좌하는 중요한 역할을 하였던 것은 그의 재능을 잘 알고 있었던 것으로 보인다.

Byeon participated in tong shin sa (Korean envoy to Japan) between 1763 and 1764 and did a lot of work as a painter. At that time, the chief delegate of the envoy was Eom Jo (? 趙). According to Jo’s “hae sa il gi (海 ? 日 記)”, a travel essay of Joseon envoy to Japan, there were several stories related to Park Byeon. When Korean envoy stayed in Tsushima Island September 10, 1763, they could find the map of the island and the printed map of Japan. Jo ordered Byeon to copy these maps. According to the essay, Byeon was a person of Dongnae and appointed as the captain of the warship escorting Korean envoy because he was good at Chinese classics and painting. According to Jo’s diary of June 8 1764, he ordered Byeon to draw scenes of splendid mountains and rivers when he passed by cham (站 an office supplying a horse to a foreign envoy or a government official) by land and sea. Although Jo has an official painter Yu-Seong Kim (有聲 金), Byeon played an important role in supporting Jo as a painter. This shows his talent well.
