Maternity fashions reflect women’s pride in pregnancy DEAR ABBY: I am wondering why pregnant women these days don’t wear smocks like we all wore years ago. While I do think pregnant women are attractive, I really don’t want to see their swollen bellies. Wouldn’t it be better to just “imagine” what is under that smock or long skirt? Does anyone agree with me? DEAR DOROTHY: Some readers may agree, but I’m pretty sure most of them won’t. You are harking back to the days when people were embarrassed about the subject of sex, and used euphemisms like “in a family way” or “a bun in the oven” to describe pregnancy. Women today are proud to show off their silhouettes. In fact, I saw a woman recently sporting a T-shirt with an arrow pointing downward and the words “Baby on Board.” While this may seem to be somewhat “in your face,” I think it’s healthier than pretending there’s nothing going on when the expectant mother is in her seventh month and it’s obvious there is. ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: I started dating a wonderful man two years ago. We will be getting married in a few weeks and own a house together. He has been a wonderful father to my two children. He loves them very much and the feeling is mutual. From the start, he knew I wanted to have a child with him, and he said he wanted the same. Last spring I became pregnant by accident, but sadly, had a miscarriage a few months later. When I told him I was pregnant, he was not excited and made comments that caused me stress. After the miscarriage, he acted like nothing had happened, which hurt me deeply because I really wanted that baby. Now he says he doesn’t want a baby anymore ― that he has changed his mind without even considering that I still want one. I’m so lost. Please give me some advice. BABY MAYBE? DEAR BABY MAYBE?: You and your fiance appear to have a communication problem. Now that you know he has changed his mind about wanting a child with you, you have a right to know why. Discussing this with the counsel of a neutral mediator would be helpful before your trip to the altar. Because the agreement between you was that you would be enlarging your family, you may need to rethink whether you want to go through with the wedding. If that’s the case, you may also need the help of an attorney to separate from him financially because you own property together. 제공: 김보미 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * smock (특히 여성이 입는) 기다란 셔츠[헐렁한 원피스] (= a piece of clothing like a long shirt, worn loosely over other clothing to protect it when working, or a piece of women's clothing that is similar to this) e.g.) She was wearing wool slacks and a paisley smock. * hark back (과거에 있었던 일을) 기억하다[들먹이다] (= to mention or remember (something from the past)) e.g.) If it was such a rotten holiday, why hark back to it?’ * euphemism 완곡 어구[표현] (= a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing) e.g.) The jargon has given us ‘downsizing’ as a euphemism for cuts. * be in a family way 임신 중이다 (= to be pregnant) * [have] a bun in the oven 임신하다 (= to be pregnant) * sport 자랑스럽게 보이다[입다] (= to wear or display (a distinctive item)) e.g.) The front of the car sported a German flag. * in one’s face 노골적인, 대담한 (= directly at or against one; as one approaches) e.g.) She slammed the door in my face.
