Fake pregnancy lures man into live-in relationship DEAR ABBY: A friend of mine faked a pregnancy to get a man to stay with her. Once he moved in, she told him she’d had a miscarriage. She even went so far as to name this so-called baby. He now has the baby’s name tattooed on his arm! She goes on Facebook and talks about how she misses her “little baby boy,” and counts every month as though it is his birthday. Every time I read it I get a sick feeling. I want to tell this man the truth. I know for a fact she was not pregnant. I’m not sure how to go about this. If I say something, I know I will end up the bad guy. Should I mind my own business or let this man know he’s living with a maniac? WANTS TO TELL THE TRUTH DEAR WANTS: Your friend may have told this lie so often that she has come to believe it herself. Or, she may be acting this out in order to hang onto the man. While I don’t think she is a maniac, I do think she may be unbalanced. I agree the man has a right to know. Wouldn’t you want to be told if you were him? The way to do it is face-to-face. And be prepared for the friendship to end afterward. Frankly, that may be for the best because the woman has more problems than you can cope with. ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: I recently married a wonderful woman I have been friends with for years. I was always secretly in love with her. We are very happy together. The only problem is that her ex-husband, from whom she has been divorced for four years, was violent. If I try to brush her hair away from her face or make a sudden movement of any kind, she flinches or panics. I have never been violent with anyone, and I know she has PTSD from her past marriage. How should I sensitively broach the subject of counseling to deal with this serious issue? CONCERNED IN THE MIDWEST DEAR CONCERNED: When it happens again, tell your wife calmly that you know it’s a reflex and see if you can get her to tell you why it happens. At that point you could suggest she talk to a counselor because you love her and would never hurt her, and when she flinches, it hurts you that she’s still carrying around this heavy baggage. 제공: 김보미 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * lure 꾀다, 유혹하다 (= to tempt (a person or animal) to do something or to go somewhere, especially by offering some form of reward) e.g.) The child was lured into a car but managed to escape. * go so far as to 심지어 ~ 하기까지 하다 (= to do something regarded as extreme) e.g.) Surely they wouldn’t go so far as to break in? * maniac 미치광이(같이 구는 사람) (= a person exhibiting extremely wild or violent behavior) e.g.) My brother is a maniac when it comes to football. * unbalanced 약간 미친, 정신적으로 문제가 있는 (= a person who is unbalanced is mentally ill) e.g.) She considered him to be mentally unbalanced and dangerous. * flinch 움찔[주춤]하다 (= to make a quick, nervous movement of the face or body as an instinctive reaction to fear or pain) e.g.) She flinched at the acidity in his voice.
