① more than : “∼ 이상”
ex-1) more than five books 여섯 권 이상의 책
ex-2) He is more than sixty years old. 그는 육십세를 넘었다.
ex-3) They have more than repaid me. 그들은 돈을 갚는 것 이상으로 해 주었다.
② no more than : “오직 ∼에 지나지 않다”?“∼일 뿐”(only)
ex-1) He is no more than a pliceman. 그는 다만 경찰관에 지나지 않는다.
ex-2) I am no more than 10 dollars. 10불밖에 없다.
③ no more A than B : “A가 아닌 것은 B가 아닌 것과 같다”
ex-1) He can no more swim than fly. 그는 날 수가 없듯이 헤엄칠 줄도 모른다.
ex-2) I am no more mad than you are. 너와 마찬가지로 나는 미친 사람이 아니다.
= I am not mad any more than you (are).
= You are not mad, nor am I.
④ not more than : 오직 ∼에 지나지 않다, 많아야 ∼(at most)
⑤ not more A than B : B이상은(만큼은) A가 아니다.
ex) I am not more beautiful than you. 너 만큼 예쁘지는 못하다.
⑥ not A any more than B = no more A than B
ex) A whale is not a fish any more than a horse is. 말이 물고기가 아니듯이 고래는 물고기가 아니다.
= A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.
⑦ no better than : “∼이나 다름 없는”, “∼에 지나지 않는”
ex-1) They were no better than beasts. 그들은 짐승이나 다름없었다.
ex-2) He is no better than a beggar. 거지나 마찬가지다.
= He is, in spite of appearances, almost a beggar.
⑧ no better ∼ than
ex) He has no better right to the property than I have. 나와 마찬가지로 …권리가 없다.
⑨ not better than : “∼보다 나을 것 없는”, “∼보다 나쁜”, “∼보다 못한”
(＊not better than은 반대어의 부정을 써서 강한 긍정을 나타내는 곡어법(曲語法)이다)
ex-1) He is not better than a beast. 그는 짐승보다 못하다.
ex-2) He is not better than a beggar. 그는 거지보다 못하다.
ex-3) He is not better than an engineer. 그는 고작 기술자에 불과하다.
⑩ no longer : “이 이상 ∼않다”
ex) I go there no longer.
= I don't go there any longer.

ex-1) It was no other than the king. 왕 자신이었다.
= It was the king himself.
ex-2) I can do no other than smile. 웃을 수밖에 없었다.
= I cannot but smile.
⑫ no other ∼ than
ex) I have no other friend than you. 당신밖에 다른 친구가 없다.

ex-1) He is none the better. 조금도 나아지지 않는다.
ex-2) He is none the wiser. 여전히 모른다.

ⓐ “꼭 ∼만큼”, “∼만큼의”, “∼도” (as much as)
ex-1) He has no less than 100 dollars. 그는 100달러나 가지고 있다.
ex-2) It cost him no less than his whole his fortune. 그것 때문에 그는 전재산을 잃었다.
ex-3) I have no less than 10,000 dollars. 나는 만불정도는 지니고 있다.
ex-4) She no less than you is beautiful. 그녀는 당신 못지 않게 아름답다.
ⓑ “∼에 못지 않게”, “∼만큼이나”
ex-1) She is no less beautiful than her sister. 그녀는 언니에 못지 않게 아름답다.

(= She is as rich as, or richer than, her sister.)
ⓑ “적어도”(at least)
ex-1) pay not less than 5 dollars 적어도 5달러를 지불하다
