셋째는 말을 달려 집에 도착했어요.
그런데 집에는 사람도 가축도 없고, 잡초만 무성하게 자라 있었어요. 그때 어디선가 누이가 나타났어요. 누이는 아주 반가워하며 말했지요. “아니, 오라버니! 어디 갔다 이제 와요? 제가 저녁 지어 드릴 테니 방에 들어가 계세요.” 그러고는 셋째의 손을 꽉 잡고 방으로 이끄는 거예요. 방에 들어서자 누이는 끈을 셋째의 손목에 묶더니 끈 반대쪽은 자신이 잡은 채로 부엌으로 갔어요. 누이는 밥을 지으며 혼잣말을 했어요.
“저녁엔 오라비 먹고, 아침엔 말 먹고. 히히.” 이 말을 들은 셋째는 생각했지요. ‘부모님과 형들은 저 여우에게 잡아먹혔구나. 어서 여기서 빠져나가지 않으면 나도 잡아먹히고 말 거야.’ 셋째는 어렵게 손목에서 끈을 풀러 문고리에 매어 놓고는 살금살금 도망을 쳤어요. 셋째는 말을 채찍질하며 한참을 달렸어요.
그런데 어느새 꼬리 아홉 달린 여우로 변한 누이가 바짝 뒤쫓아 온 게 아니겠어요! “오라버니, 저녁 지어 준다니까 왜 그냥 가? 히히.” 여우는 어찌나 빠른지 말 꼬리가 붙잡힐 정도로 가까이 다가왔어요. 셋째는 얼른 하얀 병을 여우에게 던졌어요.
하얀 병이 깨지자 그 자리엔 가시덤불이 생겼답니다. 여우는 날카로운 가시에 온몸이 찔려 비명을 질렀어요. 가시덤불이 여우를 막고 있는 동안 셋째는 열심히 달렸어요.
그런데 가시덤불을 헤치고 나온 여우가 금세 뒤쫓아 왔지요. “흥, 그런다고 내가 못 잡을 줄 알고? 오라비는 저녁, 말은 아침. 히히.” 여우는 이렇게 말하며 말 꼬리를 잡으려 했어요. 셋째는 얼른 다시 파란 병을 던졌어요. 파란 병이 깨지자 이번에는 넓은 강이 생겼어요. 여우는 강에서 빠져 나오려고 허우적댔답니다. 셋째는 그 사이 얼른 도망쳤지요. 이제는 됐겠지 싶어 셋째는 뒤를 돌아봤어요.
그런데 물을 헤엄쳐 나온 여우가 또다시 뒤쫓아 오는 게 아니겠어요! 셋째는 마지막 남은 빨간 병을 던졌어요. 빨간 병이 깨지자 뜨거운 불이 활활 타올랐지요. 여우는 불 속에서 빠져나오려고 발버둥 쳤지만 커다란 불에 휩싸여 나오지 못하고 결국 타 죽고 말았답니다. 셋째는 불에 타 죽은 여우를 보며 눈물을 흘렸어요.
비록 꼬리 아홉 달린 여우지만 한때는 귀여워하던 누이였기에 가여운 생각이 들었거든요. 잡초만 무성한 집으로 돌아온 셋째는 돌아가신 부모님과 형들을 위로하는 제를 올렸답니다. The son trotted back home on a horse. When he returned, there were no animals or people, but only weeds grown around the entire house. Suddenly, the young sister appeared out of nowhere and greeted him with a smile.
Fox: Brother! Where have you been? I will cook you some dinner. Go on into the room.
And she held his hand tightly and led him into the room.
As soon as they entered the room, the sister tied a string to her brother's hand, and took the other end with her into the kitchen. And she said as she started to cook.
Fox: I'll have the brother for dinner, and the horse for breakfast. Haha.
When the third son heard his sister, he thought, 'All of my family's been eaten by that fox. If I don't get out of here, she will eat me up, too.' The son took off the string on his wrist with all his might, tied it to the doorknob, and left the room in silence.
He ran far out, as he whipped his horse. But the fox caught up with him soon after.
Fox: Brother, I told you I would make you some dinner. Where are you going?
The fox was so fast that it almost caught the horse's tail.
The son threw the white bottle at the fox. Where the white bottle fell, there grew a thorn bush. The fox screamed in pain, as she had her body pierced by the thorns of the bush.
The son ran as fast as he could while the thorn bush held the fox down. But the fox jostled away from the bush, and caught up with him again.
Fox: You think I won't be able to catch you just because of some thorn bush? You're my dinner, and your horse is my breakfast. Ha ha ha!
The fox said, as it tried to catch the horse's tail. This time, the son threw the blue bottle at the fox. As the blue bottle broke, there appeared a wide river. The fox fell into the river and floundered. The son ran away as fast as he could.
'She lost me.' The son thought, and looked back. But the fox swam out of the river and followed him again! He decided to try the red bottle. As the red bottle broke, there was fire. The fox tried to struggle out of the fire but was soon completely surrounded, and burned to death.
The third son let the tears roll on his cheek, as he saw the dead fox. He was reminded how it was once his cute little sister, instead of a fox with nine tails. The son returned to the house covered in weeds, and held a ceremony for his family. |
