Around the world, the nuclear picture is mixed. Six U.S. reactors have closed since 1996, and seven in canada are unlikely to operate again. Although a large 10,000-megawatt plant is slated to begin construction in India next year, other countries-including Germany and Sweden-have been working on formal phase-outs of the technology. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the phase-out of the country`s 17 plants (which produce a third of german electricity) by 2020. The Netherlands, Belgium and Spain have agreed not to build any more plants.
