Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986), one of the most important organists and composers of the 20th century's French organ music, did not compose many pieces of organ music. However, he created his own world of music grafting modern music elements on the tradition of music from the Romantic period in France. Duruflé's characters of music can be examined through his Catholic family background, the effects of his two teachers Charles Arnould Tournemire (1870-1939) and Louis Vierne (1870-1937), two trends of music Impressionism and Neo Classism popular at his times, and the influence of the Cavaillé-Col organ, a representative musical instrument of organ music of French Romanticism. Church music to which Duruflé accessed at a Catholic Church shows a close relationships with his characters of music, and in particular it exerted a great influence on the use of Gregorian chant and Church Modes in his works. His learning to play the organ under Charles Arnould Tournemire and Louis Vierne enabled him to continue the tradition of French organ music. Affected by their characteristics of music, Duruflé created his own music with free but structural characteristics. In the Cavaillé-Coll organ, called a representative organ of French Romanticism, more tone colors were added to ones of classical French organs and various sounds could be created. The introduction of a new machine to the organ enabled organists to control dynamic effects and the musical volume. So, organ music depressed during that time came to develop again and then the Symphonic Organ School was established beginning with César Franck (1822-1890). Today, the Cavaillé-Coll organ is a representative musical instrument in France. |
