A Research of Context for Reading "History of Korean Literature": Point of Impossible Conversation with Theories of Korean Literature of Gale and Dakahashi who were in Korea, the combined space of Place and Time
The research aims to examine Ja-San Ahn's "History of Korean Literature" and theories of Korean literature of James Scarth Gale and Doru Dakahashi. Gale, Dakahashi and Ahn are people who in the 1910s lived in Korea and experienced its rapid change. However, they viewed Korean modern literature generated in those days from a different angle. This was a point of impossible conversation among them. Ahn recognized Korean modern literature as the succession, advance and development of its premodern literature. On the other hand. Gale and Dakahashi grasped it as the severance of relations with its premodern literature. As a token that Korean classics were being dissipated in Korea, Korean modern literature was construed by Gale. From a viewpoint of Dakahashi, it was a subject of exclusion. There was one thing in common (i.e. that they recognized the relation between their technical term related to translation and language in Korean premodern literatures as transparent) behind their viewpoints. In conclusion, this led Ahn, Gale and Dakahashi to circumstances of the impossible conversation on Korean literature among them. |
