This research aims to understand the present condition and problems of The Korean Medical Library Association's (KMLA) documentary delivery service to suggest methods for the rise in the users' satisfaction, the qualitative improvement, and the revitalization, of the service. We grasped the present condition and problems of the documentary delivery service by the analyses of the followings based on Medical Library Information System (MEDLIS) user data of 2001 to 2011: (1) the change in the data volume serviced, (2) data delivery completion rate, (3) reasons for unavailable data delivery service, (4) unavailable data delivery service rate by institution, and (5) contribution by type of institution. Further, we examined use patterns of medical researchers by analyzing the change in methods of the delivery service, the total number of journals requested by year, up-to-dateness of requested data, and use frequency by field of medicine. The main discoveries of this research are a rapid decrease in the use rate of MEDLIS compared to Kore Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) and DOCLIN, a relatively low delivery completion rate, problems by reason for unavailable data delivery service, a narrow range of journals used by medical researchers, their high dependence on back issues, and fields of medicine whose delivery rate was excessively low or high. Therefore, in order to revitalize MEDLIS, this research suggested the followings: (1) the construction of the complete database of it through technical supports for. and the committee's control over, the database, (2) the problems of unavailable data delivery service which can be resolved by librarians' efforts, (3) control of data delivery completion rate by evaluation and committee, (4) an increase in membership through an introduce of the individual membership system and the expansion of the field of MEDLIS into adjacent fields of medicine, (5) education and public relations for expanding the range of journals used, and (6) the establishment of the policy of back issue archiving. |
