최근 글로벌 기술 산업분야에서 가장 핫한 화두는 사물인터넷(IoT: Internet of Things)이다. 사물인터넷은 인터넷을 통해 사물을 연결해 사물과 사물 간에 정보가 오가는 지능형 서비스를 의미한다. 일상생활에서 사용하는 각종 기기들이 유,무선 네트워크로 연결되는 환경이다. 시장조사기관 가트너는 2020년까지 사물인터넷 기기의 부가가치가 1조9000억 달러(약 2000조원)에 달할 것으로 추산했다.

지난(2014년) 1월 미국 라스베거스에서 개막된 소비자가전쇼(CES)에서 주목 받았던 트렌드 역시 초고해상도 영상(UHD)과 함께 IoT와 웨어러블 컴퓨터(wearable computer)였다. 구글은 최근 스마트홈 관련 기술을 가지고 있는 기업 네스트를 인수했고 애플은 동작인식센서를 제작하는 기업 프라임센스를 사들였다.
