The primary purpose of higher education in the Latin American countries is to train for professions. Titles and degrees, however, lend prestige and social status to the individual, and for that reason many students acquire a diploma with no expectation of practicing the profession for which they prepare themselves. For admission to the university or other institution of higher education in Latin America the applicant must have completed the secondary school course and, in addition, pass entrance examinations. Since the cultural background commonly regarded as necessary for professional people is provided in secondary schools, Latin American universities have no liberal arts colleges.
