서울 동대문구 제기동에 위치한 경동시장은 1960년 6월 경에 개설되었다. 경기도 북부와 강원도 일대의 농민들이 생산, 채취한 농산물과 채소, 임산물들이 성동역과 청량리역으로 몰려오면서 그 반입과 판매를 감당하고자 시장을 새로이 열게 되었는데, 당시 경작지였던 지금의 자리를 매립해서 공터를 만들고 노점 상인들이 하나둘 모여들어 시장이 형성되면서 오늘날 경동시장이 탄생되었다고 한다. 이름이 말해 주듯 본래 서울의 동쪽 지역인 경기도와 강원도의 농촌 주민이 생산한 물품을 판매하였던 곳이다.
'영문 번역' Gyeong-dong Market located in Jegi-dong Dongdaemoon-gu in Seoul was established around June, 1960. Originally peasants who grew and brought groceries and products from their farms and forests in nothern Gyeongi-do and Gangwon-do flocjed to the squares in front of the railroad stations of Seondong or Cheongnyang-ri in Seoul, where made naturally a market so that the products can be carried in and sold later. It is told that the place where the present Market stands on used to be a farmland and was filled with dirt to be an open space to attract pitchers one by one and form the market now called Gyeong-dong Market. |
