Expectant mom with a past must consider baby’s future DEAR ABBY: Coming out of an abusive relationship in the past, I made some poor decisions. I moved away from home and into pornography and prostitution. I come from a small town, and it became a big deal when it hit the Internet. Everyone in my generation back home knew what I did. Years later, I’m back home. I have a wonderful husband and we’re expecting our first child a girl. My husband loves and accepts me in spite of my past, and my mother has become my best friend. I love my life here. Nowhere else feels like home. But I’m worried that my child’s life could be miserable here because of my past. She will go to school with the children of people who know my history. No parent would want their child around me and by extension her. She may also learn the unsavory things I did. I’m torn between moving away for her sake or staying. My parents are aging and have no one else to care for them. They can’t follow me, but say I should do what is best for the baby. I hate the idea of deserting my parents when they need me. But I also hate that my child will be ostracized. Can you help? LOST IN THE SOUTH DEAR LOST: For your child’s sake, I think you should relocate. As I’m sure you have already realized, people can be cruel and they love to talk. When children overhear what is said over the back fence, they can be cruel, too, and I’d rather your daughter wasn’t subjected to it. (This is not to imply that wherever you go, you might not encounter someone who recognizes you, but the chances are less.) You don’t have to move right away. Take your time and scout out locations. Arrangements can be made for care if your parents need it. But your daughter’s welfare must come first. ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: Can you settle a dispute for me? When you go up to a house with two doors ― a regular door and a screen door ― and there is no doorbell, is it proper to open the first door and knock on the second door or is it considered rude? DEAR KNOCK, KNOCK: Because in the absence of a doorbell the only way you can make your presence known would be to knock, open the screen door and knock. Then step back and close the screen door so you’re not intruding on the space of the person who answers it. 제공: 방억 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * expectant (특히 좋거나 신나는 일을) 기다리는 (= If someone is expectant, they are excited because they think something interesting is about to happen.) e.g.) expectant mother / father / parent 출산을 앞둔 엄마 / 곧 아이 아비가 될 사람 / 곧 부모가 될 사람 e.g.) She is seven months pregnant; she's an expectant mother. * abusive relationship 폭력을 휘두르는 관계, (성적으로) 학대하는 관계 * nowhere else 아무데도[어디에도] (~않다[없다]) (= in no other place) e.g.) Nowhere else feels like home. * unsavory 불미스러운, 비도덕적인(= If you describe a person, place, or thing as unsavory, you mean that you find them unpleasant or morally unacceptable.) e.g.) This is unsavory, to say the least. * ostracize 왕따를 당하다, 배척당하다(= If someone is ostracized, people deliberately behave in an unfriendly way towards them and do not allow them to take part in any of their social activities.) e.g.) He was ostracized by the other students.
