Couple wonders if parenting is worth it second time around DEAR ABBY: My husband and I are happily married and will celebrate 15 years of marriage next year. We have a five-year-old daughter. Our dilemma is whether or not we should have another child. I’m 38 and my husband is 40. We have become comfortable with the fact that our daughter is getting more independent. We plan on doing a lot of traveling, and I will change jobs after I complete school. We are not sure about starting over with a baby. We are doing OK financially, and if we have a second child, it would have to be within the next year, while I finish my classes and can be home to be with the baby. Our daughter is well-adjusted, and we plan on putting her in activities such as dance and gymnastics. We would like your opinion, and also to hear from parents who had only one child, as well as people who were raised without a sibling. MAYBE ONLY ONE IN GEORGIA DEAR MAYBE ONLY ONE: If you are considering enlarging your family only so your daughter will have a sibling, I don’t recommend it. What the six-year age difference means is that your children will not grow up “together.” By the time the younger one is starting high school, the older one will be in college and gone. Even when they are closer in age, it’s no guarantee that siblings will be close. I cannot ― and should not ― decide this for you. I am throwing your question open to my readers and will share their opinions with you. However, I’m sure they will be varied. ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: After years of enduring overdraft charges and dodging bill collectors, I have finally gotten my financial house in order. I pay all of my bills, and I pay them on time. However, I have very little money left over at the end of the week. Many of my friends have two-income households or use credit cards when they go out to eat or to the movies, which is often. I want them to know that because I decline their invitations does not mean I’m anti-social ― I just can’t afford it. I have said so at times, but I hate to be a broken record. Friends: Please know that I appreciate being invited, but don’t be offended when I am unable to join you. ON TRACK BUT STILL BROKE IN MAINE DEAR ON TRACK: I congratulate you for straightening out your finances. It’s not always easy to do, and breaking ingrained habits can be a challenge. The next step in your “recovery” is to keep reminding your free-spending friends that while you’d like to join them, you are not always able to do so. If you repeat it often enough, eventually they will get the message. It would be better if they hear it directly from you rather than read it in my column. 제공: 김보미 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * broken record (고장난 음반처럼) 같은 말을 자꾸 되풀이하는 사람 * straighten out ~를 바로잡아 주다 (문제ㆍ상황 등을) 바로잡다[해결/정리하다] (= to solve a problem or to deal successfully with a confusing situation) e.g.) I need time to straighten out my family conflict.
