All cultures, even the simplest, seem to be in a continuous state of change. The earlier anthropologists assumed that cultures with relatively simple technology and political structure represented only slight modified survivals of the ancient conditions of our own ancestors and for that reason dubbed them primitive. Also, largely as a device for simplifying their own theoretical studies, they assumed that such cultures were static or nearly so, persisting unchanged over long time periods. Actually, we have plenty of evidence that this is not the case. Not only do all archaeological records, fragmentary as they are, show change through time, but wherever explorers have visited a “primitive” tirbe at intervals of a generation or more, their reports show that changes have taken place.
