Many of the basic principles of biology have been discovered by observation and experiments with single cells. Living cells can be examined in a drop of fluid using a microscpe and one can study the movement of amebas, or the beating of the hairlike projections of cilia that cover, the body of paramecia. Since the discovery of methods of culturing cells removed from the body of a higher animal or plant, many new facts about cell function and structure had been discovered by observing and photographing such cells under the microscope. In culturing cells, a special complex nutritive medium, made of boold plasma, an extract of embryonic tissues and added vitamins and other chemicals, is prepared and sterilized, then they are placed in this nutritive medium and the cavity is sealed with another piece of glass. The tissue will live indefinitely if the medium is renewed and oxygen is supplied; cells from a chick's heart were kept alive in this way for more than twenty years at the Rockefeller Institute in New York. From such experiments it was found that cells in tissue culture do not grow old―at the end of twenty years the cells were just as vigorous and grew just as fast as the original ones. Cells isolated from a sarcoma (a type of cancer) grow with unusual vigor in tissue culture, and they grow more rapidly in blood plasma from a healthy person than in that from a person with sarcoma. This suggests that the sarcoma cells in the body stimulate some of the healthy cells to manufacture a substance which inhibits the malignant growth to some extent.

Cells isolated from a sarcoma (a type of cancer) grow with unusual vigor in tissue culture, and they grow more rapidly in blood plasma from a healthy person than in that from a person with sarcoma.
