본 계획안은 '뇌화원(腦和源) _ 뇌에 관한 지식이 합쳐져 새롭게 태어나는 공간'을 콘셉트로 삼고, 뇌에 관한 지식이 합쳐져 새롭게 태어나는 공간구현을 목적으로 하였다.

한국뇌연구원은 국내 최초로 뇌에 관한 모든 연구가 융 · 복합적으로 이루어지는 가장 높은 수준의 교육연구기관으로 오는 10월 착공하여 2014년 상반기에 완공될 예정이다.

본 계획안은 뇌에 관한 다양한 연구가 공간 구현을 통해 융 · 복합 될 수 있도록 시설 간의 합리적인 기능을 연계시켰다. 그리고 연구원들 간의 교류가 활성화 될 수 있는 공간, 진입부의 열린 광장과 체육공원을 통해 주민들과 소통할 수 있는 외부공간을 계획하였다.

건물의 연구시설, 연구지원시설, 관리지원공간은 성장 축을 중심으로 휴식과 커뮤니티를 위한 중정을 통해 상호 연결되며, 여유공지 확보를 통해 증축에 의한 성장 시나리오를 마련하였다. 또한, 서원의 전통건축배치를 단면계획에 차용하여 대지경사를 활용하였고, 내부중정을 통해 사용자들에게 쾌적한 연구 환경과 휴식, 소통의 기회를 제공한다.

연구시설은 필로티와 수변공간을 통해 보안성을 강화시켰으며, 커뮤니티공간을 중심으로 한 연구실 단위유닛과 통합형(Open Type)실험실계획으로 가변성 확보와 설비공간의 집중화를 이루었다. 또한 실험동물실은 안정적 사육 및 교차오염방지를 위해 사람・동물・물품의 반 · 출입 동선을 명확히 분리 하였으며, 동물 행동실험실 및 영상실험실을 연계하였다.

건물은 '뇌'의 이미지를 아이콘화 하여 정면성을 강조하였으며, '뇌파'를 입체화하여 다양한 입면재료를 통해 은유적으로 표현하는 등 건물의 상징성을 강조했다.

This proposal adopted as a concept 'noe hwa won (腦 和 源 a new space which knowledges of brain are integrated into)' and aimed to embody the space.

Korea Institute of Brain will be the highest level of education and research institute where the convergence and combination of all studies of brain will be done for the first time in Korea. The buildings of it are expected to begin in October 2012 and to end in the first half of 2014.

This proposal connected facilities in order for them to share reasonable functions for a convergence and combination of various studies on brain through an embodiment of space. We designed the space to promote exchange between researchers of the institute and the outdoor space which consists of an open square and a sports park at the entry point to the building that enables the institute to communicate with the local residents.

The spaces of research facility, research supporting facility and management support are mutually connected through a courtyard space for relaxation and community with the axis of the fence as its center. We made a scenario of the growth of the institute resulting from the extension of the buildings by the available open space secured. Further, we applied the sectional design of seo weon (書 院 lecturer hall) to the slope of the site of the buildings. The internal courtyard supplies a pleasant research environment and the opportunity of relaxation and communication to the users of the buildings.

The research facility strengthens security by making pilotis and waterfronts. Laboratory unit and integrated laboratory plan make possible the secure of variability and the concentration of facility space. Further, the flow line of access of humans, animals and articles to the laboratory animal facility is clearly separate to stably raise animals and prevent cross-contamination, and the line is connected into the animal behavior laboratory and the image laboratory.

We emphasized the frontality of the buildings by adopting the image of 'brain' as an icon. We also highlighted the symbolism of the buildings by creating a three-dimensional 'brainwave' and expressing it metaphorically through various facade materials.
