Sooner or later all lakes undergo an aging process and eventually disappear entirely. This procedure may take ten thousand years and is knwon as eutorophication. In this process a lake, originally crystal clear, becomes a swampy-smelling body of water full of plant growth called algae. The main requirements for this plant growth, in addition to carbon dioxide and water, are nitrate and phosphate. These minerals are usually called limiting nutrients because the plant growth is determined by the amount of these minerals in the water. Waste matter added to fresh water by people is often rich in phosphate. This is especially true of detergents, and the phosphates encourage the growth of algae. The net result is that the water of eutrophied lakes becomes distasteful and unhealthy. Eutrophied lakes can no longer support fish, and they become useless for recreation. The most famous example is Lake Erie, which is said to have aged ten thousand years in the past few decades.
