The Ptolemaic system is essentially a mathematical system invented to explain the organization of the universe. The cosmos in this view was a group of concetric spheres with a common center, the earth. The earth alone was made up of hard, solid substance; the other spheres encircling the earth were all crystalline spheres, transparent spheres containing in each a luminous heavenly body which moved around the earth in its transparent sphere. The sphere nearest to the earth was that of the moon, followed by those of Mercury, Venus, the sun, and the other planets. The outermost sphere contained all of the fixed stars that remined motionless in respect to each other, as the sphere itself moved majestically about the earth in its daily motion.

However, with the increasingly detailed knowledge of the actual movement of the heavenly bodies, the astronomers had to make the Ptolemaic system more and more intricate with the introduction of new cycles and epicycles. Copernicus treated the Ptolemaic system as a mathematical problem. He was able to prove mathematically that a sun-centered theory was simpler than the geocentric theory. Building on the findings of Copernicus, Kepler found mathematical laws describing the movement of the planets. The Copernican doctrine, however, long remained a hypothesis known only to experts. Most astronomers could find little evidence to accept it in preference to the older theory. Only with the continued discoveries and advances in mathematics was the worth of the Copernican theory demonstrated.
