A Study on Principle of Performance and Rhythm of the East Coast Ogui-gut
This research aims to elucidate the music formation, and the principle of jang dan (長 短 rhythm) construction, of Ogui-gut, performed by hereditary shamans on the East Coast. The East Coast Ogui-gut refers to a gut (exorcism) a shaman performs to pray the deceased will be reincarnated in geuk rak (極 樂 Heaven). To accomplish the goal, the music of Ogui-gut consists of three narrative phases: cheong shin (請 神 inviting gods), hyey weon (解 寃 solving grudges) and chook weon (祝 願 praying). First, cheong shin refers to a phase on which a shaman invites gods to eliminate misfortune and enshrines each of these gods. Two types of music are used to invite gods; Types A and B are undergone in the order punuri-cheongbo-geumu-subu and punuri-jaemasu-subu, respectively. The difference of Types A and B is whether to use cheongbo jang dan and jaemasu jang dan. Jaemasu jang dan is used as accompaniment for danggeumaygi of Saejon-gut with a narrative story, and Balweon-gut. Cheongbo jang dan is mainly used as accompaniment for the others. Second, hyey weon stands for a phase on which a shaman calls back the spirit of a deceased person to resolve the person's deep sorrow in this world and grant his/her bereaved family's wishes. A representative gutgeori (shaman song) for hyey weon is Chomangja-gut; it is performed in the order punuri-zosigae-derunggangee-shiseol-dojang. Finally, chook weon refers to a phase on which a shaman prays the deceased will go to geuk rak. The following types are used for praying: Types C (yeombul, samgongjaebee, and banyashimgyeong) and D (punuri, zosigae, derunggangee, shiseol, and dojang).
