That is finished.와 같은 뜻. that's와 it 양쪽에 모두 강세가 주어진다. 이외에 That's it.에는 “바로 그것이야.”란 뜻도 있다. e.g. I'm not going to work there any more - and that's it. ( 난 다신 거기서 근무 안하겠다. - 끝장이야. ) e.g. The rest are for your brother - that's it. ( 나머지는 네 형 줄 거야. - 그거면 됐어. ) e.g. Is this your coat? ( 이게 당신 코트입니까?) Yes, that's it. ( 네, 바로 그겁니다. ) * I'm telling you. 내 말하두겠는데, 경고하지만 I tell you.라고도 한다. 경고나 훈계할 때 및 주의환기를 위해서 쓰는 어법. Listen to what I say. It's true. ( 정말이지 일본인들은 외국상품을 수입하려는 의도가 전혀 보이지 않는군. ) * tip over 뒤집(어 엎)다 tip은 명사로 “끝”이란 뜻이 있다. over는 “거꾸로, 넘어져”란 뜻의 부사. tip 자체만으로도 “쓰러뜨리다”란 뜻이 되지만 “끝(tip)이 넘어져(over)"로 생각하면 쉽게 이해가 된다. * “뒤집다”, “쓰러뜨리다” e.g. Be careful not to tip over this bottle. ( 이 병을 쓰러뜨리지 않도록 조심해라. ) = Be careful not to knock down this bottle. = Be careful not to knock over this bottle. e.g. Who turned over this ashtray? ( 누가 재떨이를 뒤집어 엎었니? ) = Who turned this ash-tray upside down? e.g. The baby knocked his rice bowl over onto the floor. ( 아기가 밥그릇을 탁 쳐서 바닥에 엎질렀다. ) e.g. Please place the book upside down. ( 그 책을 좀 뒤집어 놓으세요. ) e.g. Your sock is inside out. ( 양말을 뒤집어 신었군요. ) e.g. The wind turned my umbrella inside out. ( 바람 때문에 우산이 뒤집혔다. ) = The wind blew my umbrella inside out. e.g. The boat capsized and three men were drowned. ( 보트가 전복되어서 3명이 익사했다. ) = The boat turned over and three men were drowned. e.g. The newspaper reported that a highway bus carrying 50 passengers turned over and many people were injured. ( 신문보도에 의하면 승객 50명을 태운 고속버스가 전복되어 많은 사람들이 다쳤다고 한다. ) = The newspaper reported that a highway bus carrying 50 passengers overturned and many people were injured. = The newspaper reported that a highway bus carrying 50 passengers rolled over and many people were injured. e.g. You lit the wrong end of the cigarette. ( 담뱃불을 거꾸로 부쳤군요. ) * Time's up. ( 시간이 다 됐다. ) 이때의 up은 “완료, 종결”을 나타낸다. e.g. Drink up, John. ( 존, 쭉 들이키게. ) |
