At the height of railroad travel during the 1870's, photographers increasingly took to the rails to record scenes and subjects along the lines. The format they most often employed was the stereoview―two photographs of the same subject taken from slightly different camera positions. This was accomplished with a single camera with two lenses about the same distance apart as a person's eyes. Thus, the photographer was taking two pictures simultaneously. When printed at the same size, mounted side-by-side, and viewed through slightly separated lenses, the images seemed to merge and the scene appeared three-dimensional. In an attempt to reach an audience fascinated with the American West, photographers traveled with stereoscopic cameras in addition to their large-format ones. In the inexpensive stereoviews, photographers concentrated on spectacular scenes, characteristic spots, or other notable subjects, and the commercial distribution of the photographic images was often international.
