At present only a small segment of American publishing is still concerned with the war. The vast flood of war literature and propaganda is coming to an end. Since peace has not brought an end to the anxieties of the American people, and the organization of the United Nations has not guaranteed the abolishment of war, the creative writers of the country betray the same uncertainty and bewilderment as do the ordinary intelligent citizens. The result of this uncertainty is apparent in the trends that are already obvious in American lilterature. Some of our best writers are concerned with exploring the new America that through the war effort has increased prodigiously in power and wealth and prestige.

The most successful nonfiction books reflect the interest of Americans in either the present state of their own country or the changes that war has brought about. The books of two former correspondents have been on the nonfiction best-seller lists. Among the novels, an enormously long study of several generations of an American family has headed the fiction lists. This novel, with others, represents a continuing interest on the part of the public in America's past and present.
