Thus if a painting was destroyed by a leak in the temple roof, it was not an artistic tragedy. Another one could be painted, even though the workman-ship might be inferior. Significantly, the painters, who were looked upon not as artists but as chang khien or “craftsmen who paint,” never signed their work. Yet clearly there were some of true genius―often the ones called upon to paint in temples sponsored by the king.
