Until some fifty years ago, nobody doubted that practical writing must be brief. To be sure, old-style business English sounds horrible by present standards (“Yrs. of the 20th inst. rec'd and contents noted”), but at least our grandfathers knew the virtue of brevity. Today's executive woudln't feel right if he put a simple thought in only eight words. Before he knows it, he has dictated thirty-two: “Your letter of May 20, 1960, addressed to the Executive Director of this organization, has been referred to me for reply. I greatly appreciate having the information contained in the above communication.” Maybe that's better public relations or human relations or what not, but it does waste an awful lot of the reader's time.

Can the trend be reversed? I think it can. All that's necessary is to apply newspaper and news-magazine techniques to letters and reports. American journalism has learned how to write for busy readers; let's copy the formula for government and industry.
