When the astronaut of the future steps out of his rocket ship onto an alien planet, he will have a good idea of what to expect. Through science, he will know the temperature of the planet, what its atmosphere is composed of, how large it is, and how strong its gravitational pull is. And he will have a fairly accurate idea of what kind of living things be might find.

How can the scientist tell the astronaut so much about a destination millions of miles away? Our only connection with the heavenly bodies is the immaterial light waves we see. But because these light waves can be seen, scientists can study them. For example, they can analyze the spectrum, or arangement of color bands, of the light a planet reflects from the sun. From this they can figure out what elements make up the planet's atmosphere.
