The microscopic plants that form the basis of the economy of the sea depend on light as the source of energy that they use in synthesizing starches. The depth to which light penetrates in sea water depends on several factors; on the angle at which the light hits the water surface, on surface conditions―whether smooth or broken by waves―and on the transparency of the water itself. Within the water, the longer waves are absorbed most rapidly, which means the reds and yellows disappear first and that the blues and violets penetrate to the greatest depths.... Photosynthesis depends chiefly on light of relatively long wave length, so that the phytoplankton, despite this great penetration of blue light, is limited to the upper 200 feet or so of water. All life below must depend on organic materials that drop down from this surface zone.
