Few writers have equaled Willa Cather in understanding the violent clash that occurred in the United States when the gentle, hopeful immigrants from the Old World struck the rigorous, inhospitable prairies of the New. To her, it was an eternal preoccupation, and with it she fashioned the greatest of her retrosppective novels, O Pioneers! and My Antoia, and with little difficulty transposed it to fit the life of a cultured French priest set down in a primitive New Mexico desert (Death Comes for the Archbishop) and a seventeenth-century French count and his retinue exiled on the icy cliffs of new Quebec (Shadows on the Rock).

A woman of temperament so strong that it conditioned her pioneer heroines, Cather was brought to the flat Nebraska wastes from a lush Virginia farm in 1883. She grew up something of a tomboy among immigrant Czech, German, French, Scandinavian, and Russian neighbors and native American townspeople of bustling Red Cloud. Many of them found their way into her books. While still at the university, she did critical pieces for a local newpaper, took a job later in Pittsburgh on the short-lived Home Monthly, and taught school. Eventually she was brought East by McClure's Magazine and soon became its managing editor.

Cather's consequential writing did not begin till thirty years after she had left the prairie, but her memory was so precise that her early years and friendships came alive again in vivid and loving detail. One of Ours―the story of a sensitive boy (probably her cousin Geroge)―won a Pulitzer Prize in 1922. Cather went her own way, adhering to no school, romantic or naturalist.
