영어 원문 The grammar of a language is commonly organized into interrelated grouops of rules. These include the rules of phonology, which describe how to put sounds together to form words; rules of syntax, which describe how to put words together to form sentences; rules of semantics, which describe how to interpret the meaning of words and sentences; and the rules of pragmatics, which describe how to participate in conversations, how to sequence sentences, and how to anticipate the information needed by a listener or reader. In all but a few superficial details, the internal grammar possessed by one native-speaking adult is practically identical with that of every other adult who is a native speaker of the same language. Therefore adults can intuitively create or understand an infinite number of sentences they have never heard before. They know what is acceptable as a word or a sentence and what is not acceptable, and their judgments on these issues concur with those of other adults. For example, speaers of English generally agree that, in principle, the sentence “Ideas green sleep colorless furiously” is ungrammatical and that the sentence “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously” is grammatical but makes no sense semantically. There is similar agreeent on the grammatical relations represented by word order. For example, it is clear that the sentences “John hit Mary” and “Mary hit John” have different meanings although they consist of the same words, and that the sentence “Flying planes can be dangerous” has two possible meanings. Becuase they know the sound combinations that are possible in English words, all adult speakers can agree that “brick” is an English word, “blick” is not an English word but could be one, and that “bnick” is not an English word and could not be one. 주제 어떤 한 언어의 문법이란 음성학(음운론), 통사론, 의미론 및 화용론의 규칙들로 구성되어 있으며, 모국어를 사용하는 성인은 그 모국어의 내부문법을 갖고 있다. 해석 The grammar of a language is commonly organized into interrelated grouops of rules. 한 언어의 문법이란 보통 상호 관련이 있는 규칙의 집단으로 구성되어 있다.

These include the rules of phonology, which describe how to put sounds together to form words; rules of syntax, which describe how to put words together to form sentences; rules of semantics, which describe how to interpret the meaning of words and sentences; and the rules of prgmatics, which describe how to participate in conversations, how to sequence sentences, and how to anticipate the information needed by a listener or reader.
In all but a few superficial details, the internal grammar possessed by one native-speaking adult is practically identical with that of every other adult who is a native speaker of the same language. 표면적인 세부규칙들을 제외하고는 모든 규칙에 있어, 모국어를 사용하는 성인을 갖고 있는 내부문법은 같은 언어를 모국어로 사용하는 모든 다른 사람들이 갖고 있는 내부문법과 거의 동일하다.
※ in all 모두, 합계
Therefore adults can intuitively create or understand an infinite number of sentences they have never heard before. 따라서 성인들은 그들이 전혀 들어본적 없는 무수한 수의 문장들을 직관적으로 만들어 낼 수도 있고 이해할 수도 있다.
※ intuitive [int(j)ú:itiv] 직관(직각)의, 직관적인; 직관에 의한; 직관력이 풍부한
※ intuitively [int(j)ú:itivli] 직관적으로
※ infinite [ínfinit] 무한한
They know what is acceptable as a word or a sentence and what is not acceptable, and their judgments on these issues concur with those of other adults. 그들은 단어나 문장으로서 어떤 것들이 받아들일 수 있고 어떤 것들이 받아 들일 수 없는 것인가를 알고 있으며, 이런 문제들에 대한 그들의 판단은 다른 성인들의 판단과 일치한다.
※ concur [kənk:r] ① [남에게] 동의하다 (agree)【with】, [의견 따위가] 일치하다【in】 ex-1) I don't concur with you on this point. 이 점에서는 너와 의견이 같지 않다. ex-2) The judges all concurred in giving John the prize. 심사원은 모두 존에게 상을 주기로 의견을 일치했다. ② 협력하다 (cooperate), [여러 가지 사정이] 서로 관련되다 ex) The events in his childhood concurred to make him what he is. 어릴 적의 사건들이 서로 작용하여 오늘날의 그 사람을 만들었다. ③ 부합하다, 동시에 일어나다 (concide)【with】
For example, speaers of English generally agree that, in principle, the sentence “Ideas green sleep colorless furiously” is ungrammatical and that the sentence “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously” is grammatical but makes no sense semantically. 예를 들어, 영어를 말하는 사람들은, 원칙적으로, “Ideas green sleep colorless furiously”라는 문장은 비문법적이고, “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously”라는 문장은 문법적이기는 하지만 의미상 뜻이 통하지 않는다는 데 모두 동의한다.
※ furiously [fjú(:)riəsli] 광란하여, 맹렬히
※ make no sense 뜻이 안 통하다
※ make sense 뜻이 통하다
There is similar agreeent on the grammatical relations represented by word order. 어순에 의해 표시되는 문법관계에 관해서도 이와 비슷한 합의(의견의 일치)가 존재한다.
For example, it is clear that the sentences “John hit Mary” and “Mary hit John” have different meanings although they consist of the same words, and that the sentence “Flying planes can be dangerous” has two possible meanings. 예를 들어, “John hit Mary”와 “Mary hit John”이란 문장은 같은 낱말들로 구성되어 있지만 (각각) 다른 의미를 지니고 있으며, “Flying planes can be dangerous”라는 문장은 두 가지 의미해석이 가능하다.
Becuase they know the sound combinations that are possible in English words, all adult speakers can agree that “brick” is an English word, “blick” is not an English word but could be one, and that “bnick” is not an English word and could not be one. 모든 성인 화자(speaker)들은, 영어단어의 가능한 음성결합(법칙)을 알고 있기 때문에, “brick”은 영어의 단어이지만 “blick”은 영어단어는 아니나 가능성이 있는 단어일 수 있으며, “bnick”은 영어단어도 아니고 영어단어가 될 수도 없다는 사실에 모두 동의할 수 있다. ※ sound combinations 음성결합법칙
