This motivated the existing concept of Korean-style dwelling complex defined as a particular city's area where Korean-style houses are concentrated to be extended to Korean-style house village in which rural residents actually reside. This research aims to explore modernized Korean-style houses in rural areas of Jeolla-namdo. These houses' general characteristics are as follows. Most of the modernized Korean-style houses' shapes are a "一" shape and a "ㄱ" shape. The area of the houses is approximately 90 m2 (27.25 py.) to 100 m2 (30.28 py.). They have an attached space of over-a-fixed-size area in the back of the main building to variously use the interior space. From a viewpoint of floor plain, the modernized Korean-style house is a central-living-room type and this room is surrounded by other rooms. The 5-wooden-girder structure was adopted in order to widen its interior space including the living room. It does not have a toenmaru (narrow wooden porch running along the outside of a room) due to its management and to the efficiency and convenience of space use. Instead of toenmaru, the front door was installed in most of the modernized houses; the door cannot be found in the traditional Korean-style houses. The modernized houses' building materials vary according to construction cost. Modern construction methods were applied to the modernized Korean-style house and resolved problems such as inadequate insulation. However, some of them were built by traditional construction methods. In conclusion, this research examined modernized Korean-style houses, as mentioned above. These houses are being built by a variety of theories. They have various shapes and the distinct characteristics of the area. Further, it suggested the modernized Korean-style houses as a model of new dwelling space free from the concept of traditional dwelling of Korean-style house. This research will supply preliminary data for the establishment of a plan of the more pleasant and convenient Korean-style housing construction. |
