University students who had a strong social sense of vocation as an undeveloped country's intellectual attempted to communicated together on Korean movies through foreign films. They held a 'symposium' on Korean movies and exchanged various opinions. In addition, they actively valuated Korean movies in those days through 'Movie Festival'. The discussions conducted in these activities were continuously developed by movie articles and criticisms of "The Daehak Shinmoon". Because they made emphasis on the formality and the beauty of image of movies, they wanted Korean movies to be a 'movie of image' that express Korea's reality. Further, they criticized the government-centered censorship system in those days that destroyed artistic value of movies. In order to develop Korean movies as a 'sophisticated audience', they attempted to criticize the reality of Korean movies and to suggest an alternative for the desirable future of Korean movies. In conclusion, the significance of this research is to examine the 1960s' audiences' aspects clearly by stressing these audiences, on the contrary to the existing studies on film audiences through a particular genre. Therefore, this research not only made more detailed analysis on university students defined simply as the 1960s' 'foreign film audience' but also made clear the correlation between university students' social vocation in those days as a intellectual of undeveloped countries and a 'sophisticated audience' for developing Korean movies. |
