Ungrateful houseguests leave bad feelings in their wake DEAR ABBY: My sister and her husband are well-to-do, but cheap. They recently invited themselves to stay three nights in our snowbird condo on their way to a vacation in the Caribbean. My wife and I hosted them, and during their stay we went out twice for dinner. Both times my sister was quick to request separate bills. In the meantime, we had provided lodging and all their other meals for them. I am offended that they didn't show appreciation for our hospitality by at least taking us to dinner once. I have wanted to confront my sister about my feelings, but my wife has vehemently told me I shouldn't. What would you suggest? DEAR UNEQUAL: I see two ways of dealing with this. Keep your mouth shut, avoid confrontation and the next time your sister tells you she's coming for a visit, roll up the welcome mat saying you already have other plans. Or, tell your sister how you feel. Personally, I think it would be healthier to express your feelings, because your sister's and her husband's behavior was rude. It shows that because people have money doesn't necessarily mean they have class. 제공: 김유철 부소장(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 언어연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * wake (물건의) 지나간 자국, 흔적 * houseguest 유숙객(남의 집에 일정 기간 묵는 사람) (= a person who is staying at someone's house for a period of time) * snowbird (美 비격식) 피한객 (특히 미국 북부나 캐나다에서 추위를 피해 남쪽으로 와서 겨울을 나는 노인) * vehemently 열정적으로; 격렬하게, 강하게, 맹렬히 e.g.) Some international leaders, however, vehemently disagree. * welcome mat (특히 welcome의 글이 새겨진) 도어매트(doormat); [비유적] 환영 * roll up the welcome mat, 환영하지 않다 (roll out the welcome mat [환영하다]의 반대 표현) 원문 출처: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/koreatime_adminV2/LTNIE/common/nview.asp?idx=2364&nmode=3&pageNum=3,1 |
