This research defines political viewpoints portrayed in Hua-ben Novel as characteristics of political culture. This culture is divided into feudal political culture and anti-feudal political culture. Feudal political culture can be considered as a common characteristic of a feudal system. This is because the political system and idea unchanged for a long time were unconsciously lodged in citizen's mind and heart. They had strongly a consciousness of class that divided classes into governing and governed ones. Although the governed people were harmed by the governing class, they did not assert their right because they was obsessed by the limitation of their class. In addition, Confucianism, a political idea handed down from the Han Dynasty, were deeply lodged in their mind, and hence they showed a aspect of rough formalism. They had an exclusive attitude concentrated on their ethnic group against other races' frequent invasions. However, a bud of modern political consciousness far from the feudal society appears in Hua-ben Novel. For example, in works citizen in the Song Dynasty made sharp criticisms against their emperors, resisted the group-oriented idea strengthening family and nation considered as a fundamental of the political idea, manifested individualism emphasizing freedom and equality. Their anti-government self-consciousness became a fundamental of Judical Novel (公案小說) developed in the Ming Dynasty and the Ching Dynasty that treated respectively thieves and the government as good and evil. The above mentioned "a bud of modern political consciousness of citizens in the Song Dynasty" has a importance in that it appeared in pure folk literature Hua-ben Novel at the highest of the feudal society. It is inferred from the above things that these characteristics of politics and culture still remain in Oriental countries that experienced the feudal age. This research will contribute to understanding political culture of the feudal system. |
