'Not interested' '관심 없어요' DEAR ABBY: I have a problem dealing with shopping mall kiosk operators. Many of them are outright obnoxious. They block your way and insist that you listen to their pitch or try their product. I find I have to avoid eye contact with them. They might say something nice as I walk by, but if I answer, it is a guaranteed lead-in to a sales pitch. I feel bad for not replying, but it’s the only way. I know they are trying to make a living, but I can see their product as I walk by. If it’s something I’m interested in, I’ll stop and ask. Otherwise, I think they should respect my privacy. Am I wrong for feeling this way? BOTHERED IN TEMPE, ARIZ. DEAR BOTHERED: Not at all. If a stranger speaks to you, no rule of etiquette compels you to reply. When one of these salespeople starts to pitch you, all you need to say is, “Not interested!” and keep walking. However, if someone attempts to physically restrain you, it should be reported to the mall management because that is going too far. ****************** DEAR ABBY: A friend of mine, “Cameron,” has a problem. It’s his second year in college and he’s still a virgin. He gave his heart to a girl in the past, and it left him bitter, emotionally unavailable and, unfortunately, unlaid. He is outspoken, but deep down he lacks confidence. How can my friends and I help him, and how can he help himself? HIS BFF IN CALIFORNIA DEAR BFF: You are well-meaning, but the person asking this question should be your friend Cameron. While the fact that he may be “unlaid” and “unavailable” bothers you and your friends, it’s possible that it doesn’t bother him. If and when Cameron does tell you he is troubled by it, advise him to visit the student health center and discuss it with a counselor because there may be complicated reasons for it. He doesn’t need help losing his virginity. But he may need help addressing his trust issues or he may always remain emotionally unavailable. 제공: 방억 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * kiosk 신문, 음료 등을 파는 매점 (= a small building where things such as sweets, drinks, or newspapers are sold through an open window) e.g.) a station kiosk 역 가판매 * sales pitch 팔기 위한 권유, 장사치의 고함소리 (= a way of talking that is intended to persuade you to buy something) e.g.) He's got a good sales pitch. * outspoken (남의 기분에 신경 쓰지 않고) 노골적으로 [거침없이] 말하는 (= expressing strong opinions very directly without worrying if other people are offended) e.g.) He is an outspoken critic of the present government. * BFF (Best Friends Forever) 영원한 절친 * well-meaning 좋은 뜻에서[선의에서] 하는 (그러나 흔히 성공적이지는 못한) (= wanting to have a good effect, but not always achieving one) e.g.) I know he's well meaning, but I wish he'd leave us alone.
