Shopper fumes over disorderly checkout service DEAR ABBY: It happened to me again yesterday. After I had been waiting patiently at the counter of a large department store, another woman came up and stood beside me. The clerk walked over and immediately began to ring up the other woman's purchase. I said, "I was here first!" Both the clerk and the woman apologized, but because the sale had already begun, the salesclerk completed it and I was left waiting. I am angry about it. I feel stores should have a queue where you get in line in order, or clerks should be instructed to ask, "Who was here first?" I don't want to believe I was passed over because the other woman looked more prosperous than I do, but she was buying a very expensive handbag, while I was purchasing socks that were on clearance. How should that be handled in the future? DEAR SHOPPER: If you have a complaint about service, it should be addressed to the store manager. A well-trained retail salesperson would have asked which of you was there first. The amount you were spending should have made no difference. 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * fume (over/about/at somebody/something) (화가 나서) 씩씩대다 (= to be angry, usually without saying anything) e.g.) He stormed out, fuming over the department's inefficiency. 그는 그 부서의 비효율성에 말없이 화를 내면서 뛰쳐 나갔다. e.g.) She sat in the car, silently fuming at the traffic jam. * checkout (슈퍼마켓의) 계산대 e.g.) Please put your things up on the checkout counter. * come up (to somebody) (말을 하기 위해 누구에게) 다가가다 e.g.) He came up to me and asked for a light. * ring (something) up (상점에서 금전 등록기에 상품 가격을) 입력하다; (특정 가치의 상품을) 팔다 e.g.) She rang up all the items on the till.
