Invitation to dinner is music to widower's ears DEAR ABBY: I have a suggestion for your readers. When you attend a funeral or a wake, or meet a friend or relative who has been recently widowed, don’t say, “If there is anything I can do, just ask.” Call the person in the near future and invite him or her to dinner with you. It doesn’t have to be a steak dinner or anything fancy. A home-cooked pot roast would be wonderful. Of all my friends, only one has done this several times. The phone rings and he’ll say, “We’re having spaghetti tonight. Would you like to come over? We’ll throw in another meatball.” I get so tired of going out alone to eat, or settling for a sandwich. GRATEFYL WIDOWER IN ILLINOIS DEAR GRATEFUL: When a death happens, sometimes people are well-intentioned, but they feel awkward and don’t know what to do. Thank you for writing and giving me the opportunity to remind them that it isn’t the food as much as it is the fellowship that matters at a time like this. 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * be music to a person's ears 남의 귀에 듣기 좋다, 남에게 기분이 좋은 것이다 e.g.) His remark was music to my ears. * fancy (호텔, 식당, 자동차 등) 비싸고 멋있는 (= to be expensive and fashionable), e.g.) How could you afford to buy such a fancy place? * pot roast (야채를 섞어 만든) 고기 찜 (= a dish that consists of a piece of meat, usually beef, cooked slowly in a pan with potatoes or other vegetables) * wake (초상집에서의) 밤샘 (= the time before a funeral when friends and relatives meet to remember the dead person) * throw in ~을 덤으로[거저] 주다[포함시키다] (= to include something with what you are selling or offering, without increasing the price) e.g.) You can have the piano for $200, and I'll throw in the stool as well. * settle for (something) (꼭 원하는 것은 아니지만) ~에 만족하다 (= to accept or agree to something, especially something that is worse than what you want) e.g.) In the end, they had to settle for a draw. * fellowship 유대감, 동료애 (= a feeling of good friendship resulting from shared interests or experiences) e.g.) to enjoy good fellowship with one’s friends 친구들과 정답게 지내다 e.g.) a sense of fellowship 연대감, 유대감 원문 출처: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/koreatime_adminV2/LTNIE/common/nview.asp?idx=2284&nmode=3&pageNum=3,1 |
