Husband’s family meetings leave wife out of the loop DEAR ABBY: My husband, “Rory,” and I both come from close families. Whenever something is wrong, troublesome, etc., in either of our families, we have meetings where the entire immediate family comes together to discuss the issue. The problem is, I am not invited to his! It’s not like I’m a recent addition to his family. Rory and I dated for 15 years before getting married. My family started inviting him to our meetings after we had dated for a year, including discussions about my dad losing his job, my brother’s stint in rehab and more. Rory’s family has had lots of similar meetings, but I am excluded because I am not a blood relative. Even when my husband lost his job, I was not invited to attend. I was left sitting out in the hallway with the children and the boyfriend of one of his other siblings. I am Rory’s wife. Shouldn’t I be allowed in on the family discussions now that we’re married, especially ones that center on my husband? Am I overreacting because I’m so angry about this? How can I overcome this exclusion from his family? WANTS TO JOIN IN 저는 로리의 아내입니다. DEAR WANTS TO JOIN IN: You are not overreacting. If you haven’t done so already, discuss this with your husband. He is the one who needs to make his family understand you are now a full-fledged member of the clan. If their line of thinking is followed to its logical conclusion, then no man or woman who marries in is fully accepted. “What God has joined together, let no man put asunder,” the saying goes. The tradition in Roy’s family creates division, and it isn’t healthy. 제공: 김유철 부소장 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 언어연구소 www.chunlingo.com * out of the loop 그룹의 일원이 되어 의사결정에 참여하지 못하거나 그 결과를 알지 못하는 (= to not be part of a group of people that makes decisions about important things or gets information) (반대어) be in/inside the loop (loop는 올가미나 동그라미 모양의 고리) * stint <일정 기간 동안의> 일, 활동 (= a period of time which you spend doing a particular job or activity or working in a particular place) e.g.) a two-year stint in the Navy 2년간의 해군 복무 e.g.) He did a stint abroad early in his career. * rehab (특히 美) (마약, 알코올) 중독 치료 (= the process of curing someone who has alcohol or drug problem) e.g.) to go into rehab 중독 치료에 들어가다 * clan (특히 스코틀랜드의) 씨족[문중] (= a large group of families who have the same ancestor) e.g.) the Macleod clan 맥클라우드 씨족 * asunder (구식 또는 문예체) 산산이; 뿔뿔이 (= to suddenly or violently separate something into pieces. e.g.) They were driven asunder by the war. 그들은 전쟁 통에 이산 가족이 되었다. e.g.) The family was torn asunder by war.
