'How can I express thoughtful message of condolence?' DEAR ABBY: Nowadays, I’m learning about the deaths of family members and friends by email, and I’m uncertain how to respond. I always send thoughtful, personal handwritten notes of condolence. But how best to acknowledge or respond to the email? It seems wrong to ignore it in favor of sending a letter via the Postal Service, because my message will take a while to reach the bereaved. But it also seems wrong to say, "Oh, so sad to hear the news" in an email, as if that was the sum total of my thoughts. What to do? DEAR CARING: Here’s what I do. I pick up the phone and call the person who sent the email, or a member of the family that suffered the loss. I express my sympathy and find out the details ― such as where and when the funeral or memorial will be held, and if I can send flowers or make a donation. Then I write the condolence note. ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: I recently went on a business trip that required me to share meals with my co-workers. I became the target of criticism from them over my eating habits because I like to eat my dessert first. It doesn’t keep me from eating the rest of the meal; I just do it in a different order than most people. When the subject came up, I tried to explain that because I wasn’t allowed to do it as a child, I swore that when I was an adult, I’d eat my food in any order I wanted. But lately, it has failed to diffuse the tension. I don’t think I’m being rude. I do this only at restaurants where it’s possible to order dessert at the same time as the meal. I’d never do it when I’m a guest in someone’s home. Do you think I’m being rude? Should I eat in a more conventional way to avoid flak from people I’m dining with? SWEET TOOTH IN COLORADO DEAR SWEET TOOTH: I’m not your mother, so I’ll refrain from lecturing you about the empty calories you consume, which reduce your appetite for the healthy food you “should” be eating at mealtime. And yes, I do think what you’re doing is rude because it is obviously making your eating companions uncomfortable, or you wouldn’t be getting flak along with your dessert. 제공: 김보미 연구원 chuntrans@daum.net 전종훈 번역연구소 www.chuntrans.net * condolence 애도, 조의 * bereaved 사별을 당한 (사람), 유가족 bereave: 사별하다 * flak 잇단[격렬한] 비난, 혹평, 맹공격 (= strong criticism or opposition) e.g.) She took some flak from her parents about her new dress. * sweet tooth 단 것을 좋아함 (= to like eating sweet foods, especially sweets and chocolate.) * empty calories 영양가는 없고 열량만 높은 음식의 칼로리 (= energy from food containing no nutrients (= substances that keep you healthy)) 원문 출처: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/koreatime_adminV2/LTNIE/common/nview.asp?idx=2147&nmode=3&pageNum=3,1 |
