'I do not want a dog in my house' '저는 집안에 개를 들이는 걸 원치 않아요' DEAR ABBY: My adult son and his wife have had a dog for two years. I do not want a dog in my house, but I also don’t want to prevent them from visiting (they live six hours away). We have tried keeping “Puddles” in the basement, but she whined all night, and my son ended up sleeping on the basement floor with her. They think I’m going to give in because she’s so cute, but I don’t like little animals running, jumping and yapping. (OK, I’m high-strung, and holidays make it worse.) My husband doesn’t support me and tries to sneak Puddles in when I’m not looking. This is not fair! I’m the one who keeps the house nice, but I love my son. Any suggestions? PARTICULAR IN OHIO 이건 옳지 않아요! DEAR PARTICULAR: Yes, your son should find a pet sitter or board Puddles for the time when he visits you. And if necessary, offer to pay for it. That way the poor animal won’t be isolated in unfamiliar surroundings and will have companionship, you’ll have peace of mind and your son will get a good night’s sleep. ****************** DEAR ABBY: My social circle includes a woman who has problems in restaurants. Something comes over her in this environment -- either the waiter is ignoring her, the order is taking too long, she wants to tweak the menu to her liking, the cost is too high or there’s a mistake on the bill. There is no end to it. One night she didn’t like the salad, so she picked up bits of it and tossed them on the table. Needless to say, no one wants to go out with her anymore. Her husband, however, is a great guy. When we mentioned this to him, he replied, “You’ve noticed it, too?” Have you heard of this? What’s wrong with her? She is strong-willed in most things, but the restaurant scene is her extreme. Any light you can shed on this would be most appreciated. LOST MY APPETITE IN INDIANA DEAR LOST: Having never met the woman, it’s hard to pinpoint what may be wrong. She may have OCD, be easily frustrated, or be displacing anger or frustration about something else onto the servers who cannot defend themselves. Frankly, the woman sounds like a pain in the posterior, and because she makes a habit of making those around her uncomfortable, I’m having trouble understanding why you continue to socialize with them. Many people wouldn’t. Perhaps the husbands can arrange to see him socially without her being present. 제공: 방억 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * give in (마지못해) 동의하다[받아들이다] e.g.) The authorities did not give in to the kidnappers’ demands. * yap (특히 작은 개가) 요란하게[시끄럽게] 짖어대다 * companionship 교우, 동무로 사귀기 e.g.) enjoy the companionship of a person. ~와 가까이 지내다 * tweak (기계, 시스템 등을 약간) 수정[변경]하다 (= to make small changes to something to improve it) e.g.) I think you'll have to tweak these figures a little before you show them to the boss. * strong-willed 의지가 강하고, 항상 자기가 원하는 대로 하고자 하는 (= Someone who is strong-willed has a lot of determination and always tries to do what they want, even though other people may advise them not to) e.g.) She is a strong-willed and dominant woman.
