As we sow, so shall we reap DEAR ABBY: We are a group of 10 friends, all retirees from the same large organization. We meet for lunch every few weeks and enjoy talking amongst ourselves about people we knew and situations that took place in our old jobs. A supervisor many of us had work issues with is about to retire. We are concerned that it’s only a matter of time until she approaches us and wants to join our lunch group. We have thought about saying it’s “loose-knit” and “we have no formal time or place,” but that’s not exactly true, and we’re sure she wouldn’t be deterred by that. I wish I had the nerve to tell her the group is for us rank-and-file employees ― no supervisors allowed. Because we may run into her from time to time once she is retired, we want to be gracious but assertive about our refusal to have her join us. Advice? GROUP MEMBER IN THE SOUTH DEAR GROUP MEMBER: If the woman approaches you (keep in mind that your worries may not materialize and you may not be asked), remember she’s no longer your supervisor and can no longer affect your life in any way. If she asks if she can join you, you should tell her no. And if she asks why, explain it to her exactly as you explained it to me. It’s the truth. (As we sow, so shall we reap.) ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: Does a male in his own home, walking around bare-chested, have to put a shirt on when someone is going to enter the home from the outside? DEAR DAVE: If there is any question that the person entering your home might be offended, out of consideration, you should cover up. A close friend or family member might not mind, but it’s better to err on the side of caution. ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: At a black-tie-optional wedding, is it appropriate for a man to come wearing a cowboy hat and keep it on at the dinner table? CURIOUS IN PALM DESERT DEAR CURIOUS: Hat etiquette decrees that it should be removed when a man is indoors. And according to The Campfire Chronicle (at stargazermercantile.com), “If you’re in a restaurant that serves anything that isn’t coated in barbecue sauce, it’s probably best to lose the hat.” 제공: 김보미 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * amongst ourselves 우리들끼리 * loose-knit 결속이 약한; 미약한 (= connected in a tenuous or vague way) * have the nerve to ~할 용기가 있다 e.g.) He doesn’t have the nerve to do bungee jumping. * rank-and-file 평사원의, 일반 조합원의, 서민[일반] 대중의 e.g.) a rank-and-file member [worker] 평회원 [평사원] * run into ~를[와] 우연히 만나다[마주치다] e.g.) Guess who I ran into today! * materialize (예상, 계획대로) 구체화되다[실현되다] (=to become fact; to be carried out) e.g.) The promised benefits have failed to materialize. * out of consideration 고려[배려, 참작]하여 e.g.) We will make a decision out of consideration of your status. * cover up 옷을 더 입다 * err on the side of caution 지나칠 정도로 조심하다 * optional 임의의, 자유 선택의 * option 선택의 자유, 선택권, 선택물 * decree ~을 법으로 정하다.
