Darkness cannot drive out darkness DEAR READERS: Today we remember the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who was martyred in the cause of civil rights in 1968. His words ring as true today as when he first spoke them: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: I wish you had suggested to “Left Out” that she and her husband try to learn the language of their grandchildren. It’s not difficult to learn a few foreign conversational phrases, or even be able to carry on a coherent conversation using free or inexpensive tools available at the library or online. Of course, in order to do that they have to want to reach out and make the effort. Perhaps if they did, the daughter-in-law might feel a little more welcoming and less distant. Ever since my grandkids started attending a bilingual school, I have been studying to try to keep up with them, and so have the other grandparents. Communication is a two-way street! JUDI IN ELGIN, S.C. 사우스 캐럴라이너 주 엘진의 주디 ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: A good friend and I are having a disagreement. My 17-year-old son has a 16-year-old girlfriend. I know they are sexually active. I spoke to my son and asked if she’s on the pill. He said her mom refuses to put her on the pill. I gave my son $10, had a long talk about unwanted pregnancy, and told him to buy a box of condoms every few weeks and bring me the receipt so I know the money is being spent on condoms. My problem is, my friend disagrees with me about what I did. She accused me of encouraging them. If I had a daughter, I’d buy the pill for her, so why not pay for condoms for my son? Who is right and who is wrong here? DEAR MISSOURI MOM: The girl’s mother may think that by not providing her sexually active daughter with birth control, she is discouraging her from having sex. Clearly that hasn’t happened. Of course you are right to make sure your son doesn’t impregnate his girlfriend. Neither one of them is ready for the financial and emotional responsibility of a child. Something I’m unclear about is why your friend is trying to guilt you out of it, when she should be minding her own business. Please tell her I said so. 제공: 김보미 연구원 (chuntrans@daum.net) (www.chunlingo.com) * martyr 순교자(희생자)로 만들다 (= to kill (someone) because of their beliefs) e.g.) She was martyred for her faith. * conversational 일상대화에서 쓰이는, 구어의, 회화의, 대화의 * carry on 수행하다 * coherent 생각, 주장 등이 일관성 있는, 논리[조리] 정연한 e.g.) When she calm down, she was more coherent. * available 사물이 구할[이용할] 수 있는 e.g.) I wondering, is it still available? * reach out (대중에게)연락을 취하려 하다, (손 등을) 뻗다, 내밀다, ~에게 관심을 보이다[접근하다] (= to stretch your arm or your hand in order to touch or get something) e.g.) The church needs to find new ways of reaching out to young people.
