'Guy thing?' DEAR ABBY: I am a 23-year-old woman in grad school, and I have noticed something about my male friends. Whenever they meet a new girl, the first comment out of their mouths is about her looks. Then they will expound at length on her physical assets (or lack thereof). Abby, it makes me furious. Not only does it make me feel self-conscious about my own body, it also makes me angry that these talented, charming and outgoing girls are judged first by their cup size. Is there anything I can say to my friends to make them amend their behavior? Or am I being overly sensitive and need to accept that this is a “guy thing”? Thanks for your input. DEAR OBJECTIFIED: It’s a guy thing. That they talk this way in front of you may indicate that they consider you “one of the guys.” Since it bothers you, speak up and suggest they knock it off. If you do, it may jar them back to reality. ** ** ** ** ** DEAR ABBY: I am 12 and my mom is part of a church group (Unitarian). She recently told me she is taking me to her church where they are making pies for the homeless. Even though this is a nice act, I don’t want to be a part of it (mainly because I am very shy around new people). When I told my mom, she said she thought I was being rude and inconsiderate, and that she would make me come and ground me if I didn’t go. Is there any way I can explain it to her better? DEAR SHY KID: If you have already told your mother the reason is your shyness, then I can’t think of a way to state it more clearly. She may feel that your help in the project is urgently needed, which is why she’s insisting. Or, she may feel that it might help you to overcome your shyness. Sometimes when people work together for a worthy cause they forget about themselves and their insecurities. I hope you will give it a try ― if only so you won’t be grounded. 제공: 송병택 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * expound ~ something(to somebody) ~ on something (격식) 자세히 설명하다 e.g.) He expounded his views on the subject to me at great length. * guy thing 남자들은 자연스럽다고 보나 여성들은 혼란스럽거나 화나게 하는 개념 (= a concept that men find natural, but women find confusing or annoying) * objectify (←objectified) (격식) ~을 객관화[대상화]하다, ~을 물건 취급하다 e.g.) magazines that objectify women 여자를 물건 취급하는 잡지들 * knock it off!
