DEAR ABBY: I’m a grad student who enjoys perusing social networks for jokes and stuff. The other day I came across a post from someone who said he wanted to kill himself. Naturally, I kind of freaked out. I contacted the person to ask him not to and thankfully he didn’t. Normally I don’t do the whole “Internet friend” thing, but we decided to keep chatting and since then we have become fast friends. I’m not sure how to help this person, though. He is in the military and fears losing his job if he seeks help. I don’t want to pressure him into seeing a professional, since part of what’s causing his anxiety is being ordered around constantly, but I don’t want him to hurt himself. I know I can’t save this person; I can only walk alongside while he figures it all out, but I don’t want him to suffer. Please tell me what to do! DEAR LONG-DISTANCE FRIEND: I’ll try. Are you sure this person is who he purports to be? Suicidal people don’t usually broadcast it to strangers they meet on the Internet. When you say he’s afraid that if he seeks professional help he’ll lose his job, is he intending to make a career in the military? If the answer is yes, and he doesn’t like “being ordered around constantly,” he has chosen the wrong career. You should tell this individual that it’s essential he talk to someone about his suicidal impulses who has the training to actually help him with his suffering (your word). If you encourage him to lean on you, it will only prolong his procrastination about standing on his own two feet. For both your sakes, deliver your message clearly and back away. Because you have known each other for such a short time, it shouldn’t be too traumatic. 제공: 김세민 연구원(chuntrans@daum.net) 전종훈 번역연구소 (www.chunlingo.com) * peruse (격식 또는 유머) 숙독[정독]하다(= to read something in a careful way) e.g.) A copy of the report is available for you to peruse at your leisure. * suicidal 자살을 하고 싶어 하는, 자살 충동을 느끼는 (=wanting to kill yourself) e.g.) On bad days I even felt suicidal. 아주 나쁜 날들에는 내가 심지어 자살해 버리고 싶기도 했다. e.g.) She has severe depression and could become suicidal. * ~ and stuff ~같은 (시시한) 것 e.g.) I like reading and stuff. * the other day 일전에, 며칠 전에 (= only a few days ago) * kind of 약간, 어느 정도 (=slightly or in some ways) e.g.) That made me feel kind of stupid. 그것 때문에 나는 약간 바보 같은 기분이 들었다 * freak out 충격을 받다; 안절부절못하다, 놀라다 (=to become very anxious, upset, or afraid, or make someone very anxious, upset or afraid) e.g.) You must have really freaked out! * figure (somebody/something) out (생각한 끝에) ~을 이해하다[알아내다](=to think about a problem or situation until you find the answer or understand what has happened) e.g.) If I have a map, I can figure it out. * purport (사실이 아닐 수도 있는 것을) 주장하다[칭하다](= to claim to be someone or something, or to make people believe that something is true, even if it is not.) e.g.) The book does not purport to be a complete history of the period. * stand on one's own two feet 자립하다, 홀로서다 e.g.) When his parents died he had to learn to stand on his own two feet.
